With three cats I often feel like a harried single Mother often struggling to keep them out of trouble, fed and clothed….er, well you know what I mean. I’ve even started taking a head count before leaving the apartment for any length of time lest Haddie be hiding under my bed or Petie in a drawer leaving them trapped in my bedroom all day (please don’t report me to social services!).
While I’m embarrassed to admit it, often things like quality one-on-one play time fall to the wayside. Ditto for keeping tabs on litter box habits. I have no clue who’s business is whose in there.
How often has your vet asked you if you’ve noticed changes in your cat’s box usage? Mine does every time and I find myself avoiding direct eye contact and say something to the effect of, “I don’t think so…”
Sure I’ve seen “unusual” poo consistency from time-to-time (thankfully on a one-off occasion to date), but there’s no way for me to tell whose it belongs to and as far as how often each of them goes I honestly have zero clue. Have you ever asked yourself why your vet is asking you this question? If not, it’s time you did.
Changes in a cat’s bathroom habits – usage frequency, excretion amount, length of time spent in the box etc. – can very often be the first clue to potentially serious health issues like diabetes, cancer, kidney failure and UTIs to name a few. Some of these conditions can be avoided or resolved more successfully if caught far enough in advance. Or they could be indicators of emotional issues like stress caused by factors like a new roommate or family pet.
This particularly important information when it comes to felines as we know they often hide symptoms when they don’t feel well – Jackson Galaxy has taught us that much!
Enter Tailio. It’s a wireless device that fits under the litter box and monitors weight and elimination patterns (frequency, amount) so you know if your cat – or which one of your cats – is going too much, not enough or is losing or gaining weight (and at what rate). Bonus: it’s super easy to set up!
All this vital data will be available to you on your Android or iOS smartphone in real-time, and easily shared with your vet. Having far surpassed their Kickstarter goal, the promotional pre-order Tailio rate of $129 for one unit and $199 for two units is still available (while supplies last!).
Alex Treiner developed Tailio after losing his own cat Persik to cancer saying:
“I know the heartbreak of discovering your beloved cat’s illness too late. I knew if I could develop a device that detected signs of disease or distress earlier, that it would help owners to avoid the pain of losing their pets before their time. That’s why I created Tailio.”

Tailio can be used for multiple cat and/or multiple litter box households. If you have more than one Tailio the units will share data via “the cloud” (don’t think it’s the same one those celeb pictures are on though – sorry!) where Tailio creates a “Paw Print” for each cat. The “paw print” is basically signature profile of physiology and behavior that detects trends and identifies each cat with out the need for hardware of any kind on your actual cat.
Finally, you’ll know which kitty is trying to dig an escape route to China, who only goes at night under the cloak of complete privacy, and which one spends so much time in there they must be reading Cat Fancy!
You can match a “Paw Print” to a particular cat and rename the profile when you are at home and see a particular profile become activated when say, Bob the ginger tabby, goes to use the lavatory.
Because each cat has his or her own “paw print” you’ll be alerted to changes in weight and habit for a particular cat. I could, for example, get an alert for something as simple but helpful as learning Haddie hasn’t peed yet by 1pm while she usually goes twice by that time (a clue she could be trapped in my bedroom***run home to release Haddie and hope the comforter has been spared!***)
Tailio can even tell you when the litter box needs to be cleaned – something seemingly simple that could help resolve what you feared was a more serious issue (nope, just a cat who’d rather go on the rug than a dirty toilet-thank-you-very- much!).
With Kip getting older with the tendency to be on the thinner side, Petie literally breaking into cabinets and the refrigerator scavenging for food, and with Haddie’s sister Birdie (my sister’s cat) recently losing her young life to lymphoma at age five, I know Tailio will be an important addition to my home.
Tailio will not only in providing my vet with useful and accurate data, but will provide me with the confidence ’m doing everything I can to be proactive in catching signs of health concerns in my furry children.
So be sure to check it out and get one now while you can at a discounted rate and share with other cat parents you know. Tailio’s Kickstarter campaign along with those introductory prices-points end on Thursday December 12th. The units are expected to ship by April/May of 2015.
Tailio is breakthrough technology everyone with a cat should know about – sooner rather than later.
