A Kotex ad in Asia created by the illustrious advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather compares the sensitivity of a women’s who-ha/down-there/v-jay-jay through the use of felines. Hardly subtle.
The agency assures us the cats were not harmed by the tape used in the commercial. They clearly received complaints given the note at the top of each frame PHEW! And I thought you were going to apologize for your crass use of a thinly veiled analogy.
AdWeek slayed me with their piece on the spot, but let them off easy in my opinion:
“Kotex Tells You to Be Gentle With Your Cat (What’s Another Word for Cat?)
Cats are very sensitive. And when you apply sticky tape to them, they tend to walk funny. Just like when your pad won’t stay in place and decides to adhere to your crotch.”
Seriously Kotex? Seriously Ogilvy & Mather?
I’m certain David Ogilvy is turning in his grave.
Were the clients and agency both high on catnip when deciding this was a great idea?
Kotex claims the spot has gone viral with over a million hits on “social platforms,” but YouTube suggests otherwise with a mere 54k views. At least 50 of those are mine by the way.
Talk about LAZY creative. I guess SOMEONE’S a MARU fan and wanted to film cats (not that I have anything against that per se. obviously). And don’t give me the, “it translates differently in other cultures” argument. I ain’t buying.
Am I the only one offended by this? And not because the poor pussies…I mean cats!, had to endure being stuck with tape. Which reminds me of something else actually….ouch!
