Decorating with (Faux) Cat Grass

Cat grass, it’s not just for cats any more. Well FAUX cat grass anyways.

While I love the idea of having fresh cat grass all over the apartment, I can’t seem to get the stuff to last for more than a few days. Is it just me? So here are a few cat-safe ways to add some green to your home without the need for a green thumb.

First up, the Cat Grass Charging Station (above). I can’t lie, I just ordered one online. I’ll let you know how it works out for me.

And who knew IKEA would be the homeland for fake cat grass aficionados. It makes me want to take the ferry out to Red Hook this weekend (and I might do just that!).

Check out the faux cat grass plant (above) for a mere $3.99. Pair it with one of these affordable white pots ($1.99) and can’t you just envision a few of them in your kitchen? Bathroom? Or lining your stair case?

If you really wanna go crazy you can drop an entire Andrew Jackson ($20) on one of these sleek faux cat grass numbers.

So do you guys use real or fake cat grass to decorate your home? What do you think of these finds? Acceptable? Over the top or just plain silly? I wanna know!

  1. Our guys never like the potted grass. They love the real deal.

I love the look, and I would love to have it around, but I don’t think it’s just you – it doesn’t last long.  However, I grow my own; my local grocery store sells organic wheat berries by the ounce, so you take a TB, soak in water for 6-8 hours (no more or it will mold); sprinkle over a pot of moistened soil and lightly sprinkle just enough soil over to cover the seeds.  Lightly water and cover with plastic wrap, put in a dark place, check to see that it stays moist and uncover and put out in the light once you see grass shoots.  I have one cat in particular who loves this, and I grow her one each week for next to nothing as opposed to $7 per pot at Petsmart.

But I would love to have a fake grass plant – I have a modern round vase/planter that would look fantastic with the contrast of the spiky grass, and of course I don’t want the cats to knock it over and break it trying to eat the real stuff..  Maybe I’ll make a trip by Ikea and pick one up.

Well, I got a grass plant at Ikea on Saturday and by the time I’d unloaded everything from my car one of my cats was chewing on the it!  So I moved it to the mantel,  but twice over the weekend I’ve had to severely discourage another cat from getting up there.  Wouldn’t that be the pits if I can’t even have a plastic grass plant because they will chew it?

oh no…now i’m wondering if that will happen to me. can’t we spray something on it to keep them away? like i hear they don’t like citrus!

Good point – they don’t like citrus, and I think I have something to spray on cords to discourage chewing. Maybe I’ll try that on my faux grass plant!

The lady has given me containers of cat grass (the real kind). I just sniff them a walk away.  I will eat blades of weeds (we don’t have grass) that sort of look like grass.

The lady has to give a thumbs down on fake greenery.  That’s just something she doesn’t like: fake plants, dried flowers….she likes the living stuff.   That charger thing though, that is an interesting conversation piece…so, maybe..
Sigh. I was trying to post a comment as Mr. Black the cat through Google, but it did my real name. Could you please remove this comment and I will try again? THANK YOU..

I don’t have a green thumb. And I’m afraid I”ll poison the cats with anything i do bring in. So it’s safe for me! I prefer to have real plans too.

  4. Real over here. They love to lay in it. And we just keep a supply of seeds to restart from time to time!

  5. FAUX cat grass?? I don’t get it. Does it do anything for the cats?…
