Catflexing

The first I’d ever heard of Catflexing was on my friend GloGirly’s blog. Catflexing is a way to incorporate your feline into your muscle flexing workout.

Seeing that Petie and I both needed to shed a few pounds, I thought this might be the perfect solution, and obtained a copy for myself.

work out with your cat

The book authored by Stephanie Jackson, a doctor of some sort (unclear if an MD or PhD) has a 1940s vibe but was published in the 90s.

Haddie takes a closer look at Catflexing.

Skimming the intro, I decide to test-drive a few of the exercises and proceed to audition each of my three cats as potential partners.

It quickly became clear that not all cats are cut-out for Catflexing. Or maybe not all owners are patient enough to invest the time necessary to acclimate said cat(s) to the program.

Clearly this is an exercise I’ll never be executing.

What’s your take on Catflexing- bonding opportunity or cat torture? Have you ever tried working out with your cat?

If you’re interested in giving Catflexing a try, send photos and video my way (ihavecat@gmail.com), maybe you’ll have better results than I did!

Haddie’s last word on Catflexing. Book closed!

Great video! You’re cats are adorable! And you don’t need to lose an ounce. Petey maybe, not you!

    • LOL! Thanks Jennifer. Trying with Petie-Pants. May have found a toy he will actually MOVE for. Shock!

  • My human reviewed that book for one of her fitness websites way back in the early 2000s. Since I weigh less than 6 lbs., she has not tried strength training with me, although a couple of times she tried to get me involved with one her cardio dance DVDs she works out to. I think I stuck with that for even less time than your cats stuck it out with your workouts.

    • You are your human are so ahead of the game!

  • well i have to agree — you do not need to lose weight! however if i was to do this workout with Cheeto as my willing accomplice/victim/partner, i could not record it — “holy cow” would be one response. i do think cheeto would allow this to happen so i’m going to have to find this book and put it in my amazon shopping cart for future purchasing 🙂

    • I would LOVE to see Cheeto doing these work-outs! Poor Petie! I felt so bad for him – his pink toes all splayed out!

  • petie told me “it’s squats.. or nothing”.
    20 lbs.. really?
and they said the camera puts on 10lbs.. he looks like a twig!

super idea.. i’ll try it.. but only if SHE gives me GRUB when we’re done..
    this looked exhausting!!!

    • He is quite a bowling ball my Petie is! Let us know if you try it! we want photos/video!

  • Aimee Bourner

Oh gosh! Xanthe and Nishiko would not stand for any of that! lol… Haddie looked like she was enjoying those lunges though 🙂

    Kitty x

    • Not sure how much she was enjoying versus being very confused. She is quite tolerant that’s for sure!

  • I made Lexy a profile on Wii Fit and she almost tore me to shreds. I don’t think this would bond us. LOL I think it would be torture for ME!

  • I do “cat push-ups” with Neko. When I get on the floor to do any exercises, Neko will come and rub up against me. Cat push-ups are when Neko lies right under my chest, so I’ll go low enough to touch her (about 5 in. off the ground) and back up. On the push-up, Neko likes to rub her head against my chin. It’s pretty cute how she got involved in my work-outs!

    • That is SUPER SWEET! I can’t imagine any of my cats actually staying on my back or legs without my holding them down!

      • no, not on my back, but UNDER MY CHEST, as I’m doing push-ups. Shows how much she trusts me to not squish her on the “down” part!

        • yes, I understand. I was just saying i can’t imagine how cats actually stay put in those situations! i think it’s sweet she hangs out under you! cute!

  • I also tried using Priya as a Medicine ball, for twists and stuff (she’s 12lbs – same weight as the med balls I use at the gym), but her length made it difficult…

    • oh….good one! Petie would be great for that! a big ball!

  • I think some where on that book may say… : ‘sedate the cat first if you wanna do this exercises’ Maybe on a note, with small letters??? lolol!!!

Loved the video.. And how ‘relaxed’ they were! :p

    • LOL! Thanks Annelle! Petie’s pink toes all spread out just killed me!

  • Rebecca

I love this! But, Stella only weighs 9lbs and isn’t interested in passively cooperating! Alas, I must find ways to deal with my extra LBs without her help! Love that Haddie has a clear opinion! I don’t see Petie…what was his feeling about CATFLEXING!????

    • Thanks for your comment Rebecca! I realized the VIDEO was missing! Check it out now and you will see all THREE kitties in action! you were right about Haddie Girl!

  • This is a trip! I love the video. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. And the cats were very cooperative. Pimp would have never even let the bicep move happen!

    • Tamar

Thanks Dorian! Glad you liked it! 🙂

    • Thanks Dorian! I love Petie’s little toes all spread out! The video thing is a new world for me. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  • Ingrid King

I got this book when it first came out in the 90s. None of my cats, past or present, have ever cooperated – but it’s a cute idea.

    • Yeh, I don’t see this becoming a regular thing in my life. It’s good bonding if your cats are into it but it’s DEF not a workout! LOL

  • OMG!!! I do curls with my cat Spooky… and he loves it. For him it’s “Daddy and Me” time. While I’m sure Boo would allow me to as well, the look on his face when I do it with Spooky tells me he wouldn’t like it much.

    • That’s a riot Damun! I don’t think my cats will ever be catflexing with me again! LOL

  • OMG THIS WAS COMPLETE GENIUS!!!! THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN!! LMAO!! First of all, you don’t need to lose an OUNCE but thanks for thinking that you do because this was superb!!! You can tell how much you love your babies and how much they love you! This was just FANTASTIC! I am going to post it on Facebook if yo don’t mind 🙂

OF COURSE YOu can -share away! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • If I try this with my cats, I’ll end up in the hospital – and not because of the work out! 😀

    • But don’t you think you should at LEAST give it a try and send me a video? Perhaps with one of your dogs? LOL!

      • Oh boy, can you imagine trying to lift a 100-pound dog?? 😀

  • I don’t think my cats would go for this for longer than a minute or two, tops.

    • Hi Julia! Thanks for commenting. Yeh, i don’t think it was a big hit!

  • Oh my goodness – thanks for the awesome laughs. I love it – I would totally try this with my cats and they’d be just as annoyed.

    • Well if you decide to give it a go, def send pictures! 🙂

  • I just found your site. Super cute! Your CatFlexing video is awesome! The splayed hind toes were hilarious!

  • Of my 8, I would probably try it with my Bubba… the others would not be impressed at all. Enjoyed this immensely… thank you for sharing Tamar… and a BIG KISS and HUG to your 3 babes…. what would we do without our cats?

    • THanks so much Maria! My cats aren’t really fans, I just thought it would be fun to give it a try once! I guess some cats really do like it! Guess it depends on the cat!

  • TawnyCat

Better idea is to leave the poor cat alone.  No cat is going to enjoy this.  Maybe I’m nuts, but I love my catties too much to impose my whims on them just for my “entertainment.”

    • I totally agree! It was more of a gag…I don’t seriously think it’s a good idea. But trust me, I love my cats too much to have done it if they were in distress. They are pretty easy going kitties!

  • Cat AND human torture! I have two VERY active (and very strong) two-year-old cats, and they’d claw my eyes out.

But, when I try to workout on my own, Hide and Seek like to “help” me (read: make it as difficult as possible to actually exercise). I’ve learned to hold a dangly toy in each hand to distract them.

    • I want a photo of THAT! A dangly toy in each hand as you work out! LOL! you can work on your coordination and balance too! THanks for visiting and commenting Kate!

  • This would be totally impossible with Cali!!!!!  She doesn’t even like me to pick her up!!!

    • Um…did i mention my cats don’t like to be held either? 🙂

  • Brad Reason

    I’m toned! They’re toned! It’s a win-win!

      Agree!!

  • CHo Meir

Oh yeah, that works out really well (not).

  • LOL I like my skin the way it is.  While my Piper is a good heft for a workout – and she does like to be carried around – I think I would be seriously slashed.  I couldn’t do it to her!
